We all know by now that we’re in a major recession, and it doesn’t look like it’s getting better any time soon. As we look back through history, we know that while many markets and niches wither up and die during contracting economies, others flourish. There’s that old reference that everyone makes about measuring the economy by lipstick sales. The theory being that no matter how bad an economy is, women will always spend money on makeup…primarily lipstick. Well, the same can be said about other hot niches in these tough times.

Let’s get right down to brass tactics. What’s bugging you the most now during this economy? Is it constantly worrying about the security of your job? Have you already been out of work for months and have no hope of finding a way out of that unemployment line? Are you stressing because you are almost out of medical benefits? Do you have kids to feed and a roof to keep over your heads? Every single person is affected by these troubling times in some way…either directly or through family and friends who are having a tough time.

Everyone is looking for ways to relieve these fears somehow…and it’s primarily through two specific niches: Confidence & Escapism.

You, as a business owner, need to tap into how you can speak to these two concepts. How can you boost consumers’ confidence and help them escape reality? In the Depression era, people spoke to their escapist urges by going to the movies. Movie sales skyrocketed during tough times…in modern-day business, the Internet has become king. That’s right, eCommerce and Online Businesses have increased threefold, and there doesn’t appear to be a stop sign in the road.

So what are some examples of products or services you can sell online that would help boost confidence? Maybe it’s a health product that makes people feel better about themselves or maybe it’s your services as a life coach for self-development. What about escapism? What if you were a travel agent who started tapping into Online Marketing? Think you could make a sale or two? Do you sell arts and crafts supplies for when people want to wind down?

The sky is the limit when you can tap into these top 5 markets to be in during a recession:

• Low price tag offerings (ex: arts & crafts supplies, DVD tutorials, vitamins)
• Outsourcing (ex: ghostwriting articles, telemarketing services)
  
• Health & Well-Being (ex: vitamins, fitness DVDs and programs, nutrition)
  
• Business Consulting (ex: online marketing, quality assurance)

It’s evident at this point that Social Media is a necessary “evil” for your business.

Every single company has it…all the way down to your local real estate agent. They’re tweeting, pinging, poking, and all sorts of good stuff. The question for every small business owner, though, is with everything I have going on, how in the heck am I supposed to be able to keep up with Social Media too?

Of course, you have two options here. If you’ve got the money, and you know some trusted individuals you can outsource too, go for it. There’s a catch here, though. If you’re outsourcing to a large company who gives your account to someone who’s not qualified, who doesn’t understand your business model, and doesn’t necessarily have any interest in your business…well, you can imagine just how “social” they’ll be. Not to mention, they could potentially end up damaging your social posture by posting things that aren’t in line with your business methods or ideals. That’s not to say there aren’t qualified companies who take on limited numbers of accounts per employee to ensure your account is taken care of to its fullest potential. If you’re lucky enough to fine one of these, and the costs are right, you’ve now figured out one of the best business management ideas ever…DELEGATING!

Now, let’s say you’re like most small businesses out there, and you can’t allocate the funds for Social Media outsourcing. How do you tie in Social Media to your everyday operations? Because it does need to be done pretty much every day. Consistency is key with Social Media.

We’ve come up with a formula that we’ve found works for most small businesses, and that’s this. You need to set aside 20-30 focused minutes for Social Media every day. During that 20-30 minutes, you’ll want to do the following.

• Respond to any direct messages you’ve received on Facebook
• Respond to any @replies or direct messages on Twitter
• Approve new Facebook and LinkedIn friends
• Check your blog for any comments that need responses
• Post something that is fitting with your businesses’ online posture on your business Facebook page
• Respond to any messages on your Facebook wall and you businesses’ Facebook page
• Wish Happy Birthday to any Facebook friends
• Twitter any recent blog posts or articles you’ve written that you feel add value

Remember, the trick with Social Media is to add value. It’s not about selling. Obviously you can’t complete all these tasks in 20 minutes every day, so you’ll have to spread it around your week to get it all accomplished.

So…you’ve got a blog. Great! Now what?

This is where 99% of “bloggers” fail. They hear everybody and their mama talking about “blogs” are the new “it” thing, and everybody, including mama, is right! Blogs are the new, and seriously hot, medium that companies are using to boost their following. This is true for several reasons. Blogs are personal and engaging. They’re more fun to look at than your average, stale, insanely boring, static, mundane corporate websites. They’re highly flexible and allow you to have a cheap Content Management System if you know what you’re doing. They tend to rank higher in search engine indexes than static websites.

…and that’s just the beginning!

Now you, as the business owner, says, “Swell! I gotta get me one of those bad boys!” You opt for one of the following three options. You go the cheap-o route and set up a Blogger/WordPress.com blog, you man-up and foot the $50 bill for a WordPress.org blog with a ready-made theme you purchased from a company, or you go balls out and buy the VIP Champagne room package and get a completely customized WordPress.org blog website made for you. We can help you with all three, by the way. Whether you’re on a Hamburger Helper budget or you’re eating caviar with the finest.

Now you’re thinking, “Freaking sweet! My blog looks great! I’m ready to go!”

You…are…dead…wrong.

What about your content? You’re forgetting the reason why blogs are so powerful! It’s the content that matters, and not just throwing up homemade videos of your kids’ first steps. I’m talking about real, quality content that people will find useful. Although, that’s still not the entire solution either. That content has to be compelling enough to grab someone’s attention in the approximate 1-3 seconds you have before they back-button their way out of your blog and on to the next best thing.

Content applies to many things, including the look and feel of your blog. If you opted to have a Blogger/WordPress.com blog, you’re SOL…@*)# out of luck! If you opted for option 2 (the $50 set-up we talked about a little further up) or option 3 (the “VIP” set-up with the completely custom design), then you may be okay. Actually, if you opted for package number 3, you’re well on your way to concentrating on other areas of your blog (i.e. posts, affiliate banners, etc.) For those who chose the $50 set-up, you better be careful. Having a professional look and feel on your site is of the utmost importance.

This doesn’t necessarily mean you’re blog needs to look like a copycat of some corporate website, but it does mean that you should have professionally designed logos and blog themes…not something that you threw together in Paint or your snot-nosed teenage kid made for you.

Imagine for a moment that you’ve landed yourself in the unbelievably lucky position of having a targeted customer land on your blog. In the 1-3 seconds they are there, would they look at your blog and think, “Ummm…I’m not buying from this mom and pop shop” or would they think you mean business?

We recommend two avenues that we’ve seen pay off time and time again. Obviously, if you can pay for the completely tailored and custom-made blog, then you should go for it. The bill shouldn’t be a problem for serious entrepreneurs and business owners, because they will see that their blog is an investment that will pay for itself 100 times over. I‘m back again folks and I really needed to get this video out.

Let me Speak into the Microphone.

So I can be Crystal Clear…all MyBrandBuilderPro and Empowered Brand Builders, Inc. students pay close attention.

We have had so many people make this mistake this week alone I had to write a post about it. PLEASE…never copy something from the Internet or from Microsoft Word, or anything else for that matter, and paste it into your WordPress Blog or WordPress Website.  WordPress uses what is called a WYSIWYG editor which stands for ” What You See Is What You Get”…which really means…if you copy junk and paste it into me I will blow up your blog.

Now there are some exceptions but I am not going to tell you 99% of them because it will not help your cause at all!  You can take text copied from Word and place it into NotePad which will strip the JUNK that is wrapped around the text out. In reality I don’t recommend you do that either.  You will end up having to reformat all of your text anyway so why bother. Just type the damn document straight into this editor and stop cutting corners

Now with that out of the way…let’s get into blog posts in more detail.  Most of our students are using one of the four hot blog themes including this one which is Thesis.  Have you begun to dig around in your Admin area. We have made a lot of custom tweaks to your CSS and PHP code within Thesis but that does not mean you can’t add some amazing plugins and widgets IF YOU ARE CAREFUL. Enjoy your blog and by all means makes posts, add videos, be creative with photos, etc. etc. Have FUN! Content is still King and if you enjoy making content you will go far.

Remember when in doubt call our office or send an email to support.  We will make sure you don’t BLOW UP your blog…grrrr so many have come close this week.

Keep your nose clean by writing your own content, type directly into your editor and don’t past graphics, videos and pictures the size of  Texas in your Thesis blog and you will be just fine…!
