Ah, Americans. We just love our TV. For over 70 years now, we’ve been curling up at night with our loved ones and watching broadcast
television. We can’t get enough of it! And we keep changing what we want to see. Reality TV really began to boom in the early 2000′s, and hasn’t stopped yet. For some reason, we just love to see other people’s lives.
Now, that same trend is warping some more. We’ve moved away from just relying on your standard television to watching videos and TV online. The amount of viewing done by Americans online is staggering. We collectively watched 31.2 billion videos online in March of 2010. That’s right, that’s just the statistic for March 2010. Approximately 180 million U.S. internet users contributed to that monstrous number.
Let’s think about this from a marketing perspective. I’ve just now told you that you have the ability to reach about 180 millions + users simply by utilizing Video Marketing. Potentially, you could do this for free, although many video networks don’t particularly care for it. In fact, if you’re in an MLM/Network Marketing, posting videos in YouTube, and you begin spamming people with your videos, messages, friend requests, etc., you’ll feel the wrath of the Google Slap. A lot of people think they’re slick and create several fake profiles and begin uploading the same videos over and over into these “faux”files…only to see all that work quickly down the drain when their accounts are suspended, and your YouTube usernames are no longer available.
What many people will do when they are planning on doing Video Marketing online is utilize content networks (i.e. Google’s content network) or just straight up go right through YouTube and post a video ad in there…same difference. Prices may vary!
It’s becoming more apparent that as we spend more and more time on video networks, their real estate is becoming more valueble than the standard search engine results. Why is this? It’s called TOS, folks. Time On Site. When you search for a term/keyword, you’ve literally got about 3 seconds max exposure time to hook someone’s interest before they steer away from the results page. Think about it…3 seconds to make someone click on your ad or find your page in the organic search results…and that’s if you actually rank on page one!
Now, circle back to your average YouTube user. 135.3 million viewers watched 12.9 billion videos on YouTube.com (that’s 95.6 videos per viewer). You do the math. That’s a lot of time on one site, and that’s just YouTube. If you include all U.S. internet users, approximately 85% watched an online video. We’re dumping massive amounts of time on these sites. You can see the benefit for video marketers.
Next time you’re planning out your marketing strategy…try setting up that tripod. Lights…camera…and MASSIVE action = MASSIVE results.
