FTC Cracks Down On Bloggers

by Scott Jay Ringle on April 28, 2010

The FTC has long since been trying to make an example out of online bloggers, and their crusade continues on. Blogging 101

Recently a scandal occurred with Ann Taylor’s blog that incited an investigation into the company’s blogging habits. Essentially, bloggers were told that they could preview the Loft division’s Summer 2010 line, and those that posted comments would be entered into a gift card drawing. It was explained that the blogger must submit their posts to the retailer within 24 hours to reveal what the value of the card was.

So, if you’re not exactly clear what the company did that was questionable, let’s just clarify for you. On the outside, it appears that the Loft summer line has a lot of online buzz and chatter going on, causing a ruckus that will hopefully spread, making you want to purchase some of the products. The issue is, ,these bloggers were given incentives to write these posts for some sort of compensation, and the FTC is concerned that this wasn’t made clear.

What does this mean for you? It means the FTC is out for blood, and everyone’s just waiting to see who they’re going to make an example out of. In order to steer clear of their wrath, all bloggers should be making sure that they disclose any incentives they have for promoting a product. If you have an affiliate blog, you should have a disclaimer saying something along the lines of “I am paid/compensated for promoting this product”, instead of just saying, “This is the most awesome product ever! Buy it!”.

Bloggers beware!
